What this test tells you
Start here to find out which public address this website sees, or to inspect an address you supply. An IP address identifies a network connection at a particular moment. It does not reveal someone's name or exact home address, even when the map looks precise.
How to run the test
- Leave the address field empty to check the observed connection, or enter the public IPv4 or IPv6 address you want to inspect.
- Run the lookup and check the stated observation source before reading the location details.
- Read each provider's response and the agreement for country, city, network and organisation separately.
How the measurement works
The server validates and normalises the address, then consults the configured IP information providers. An autonomous system number, or ASN, identifies a network in Internet routing.
The queried IP is sent to those providers and responses may be cached temporarily. An optional server egress fallback measures the server's outgoing address, which may differ from your browser's address.
Understanding your results
- Providers agree
- Several databases attach similar information to the network block. Agreement strengthens that description, but does not establish your physical position.
- Details differ
- Country, city or organisation records may have different ages or describe different parts of the operator's network. Examine the field that disagrees.
- Information unavailable
- A provider error or missing field leaves that detail unknown. It is not evidence of an untraceable or unusually private address.
Compare before and after
- Save the initial address, IP family and observation source on this device and browser.
- Change one connection setting, such as connecting a VPN, and repeat the same lookup.
- Compare the actual addresses first, then the provider details. A new city alone does not prove a new route.
Limits of the test
- Mobile networks, shared gateways and VPN exits can represent many users at once.
- An ASN describes a network; it cannot certify that an address belongs to a particular VPN service.
What to change, if needed
- The address stays unchanged after a connection change
- Check that the intended app or browser traffic uses the new route, then rerun from the same browser.
- Only the estimated city looks wrong
- Check other providers and the address source before changing connection settings. Database corrections belong with the relevant provider.
Frequently asked questions
Can this locate my home?
No. The location is an estimate associated with a network block, rather than GPS coordinates or a postal address.
Why do I have both IPv4 and IPv6?
They are separate address families. Your browser can use either depending on the destination; compare like with like.
